When most people picture a Himalayan salt lamp, they picture pink. Pink is what the Khewra mine produces most commonly, and pink is what fills most shops and websites. But within the same mine, in specific sections where the mineral composition differs, the salt takes on a completely different appearance: a cool, silvery grey.
These are rare. Not artificially rare — genuinely rare, in the sense that they represent a small fraction of what the mine produces and cannot be reliably scheduled or manufactured on demand.
Why some salt is grey
The color of Himalayan salt is determined by its trace mineral content. Pink salt gets its color primarily from iron oxide a small amount of rust, essentially, distributed through the crystal structure. Grey salt, by contrast, forms in areas where different mineral combinations are present: typically higher concentrations of magnesium and calcium, with less iron.
The result is salt that looks almost like polished stone dense, cool-toned, with a metallic quality to the surface. When hollowed and lit from within, it produces a dramatically different visual effect compared to pink salt. The interior glows amber, while the exterior retains its cool grey tone a contrast that makes grey lamps look almost otherworldly.
Why they are less common
The Khewra mine does not produce grey salt uniformly. It appears in isolated pockets and seams within the mountain, and the quantity available in any given season depends entirely on where the miners happen to be working. This means grey salt lamp production is genuinely constrained by supply, not by manufacturing decisions.
For this reason, grey salt lamps are typically more expensive than pink ones, and serious collectors of salt lamps treat them as distinct and harder-to-find pieces.
Who chooses grey
The people who seek out grey salt lamps tend to be those for whom interior design matters as much as the wellness aspect. Pink lamps are warm and inviting. Grey lamps are sophisticated they work in modern, minimal spaces, dark-toned rooms, and interiors that favor stone, slate, and natural materials.
